Urbig keeps his fingers crossed for the "Double" - What happens in the summer?

Jonas Urbig has already experienced more at FC Bayern than he ever expected. And he could even make history.

Jonas Urbig has so far only been a man of loud voices on the pitch and not off it, which is probably for the best. After the 3-3 draw in Leipzig, the young Bayern goalkeeper analyzed the then-unclear championship situation as well as his blunder before the 0-1 goal in a very sober and objective manner.

Urbig had been positioned very high—as coach Vincent Kompany had requested—and, after Xavi's outside-of-the-foot pass, looked for a way forward to prevent Benjamin Sesko from scoring. He then changed his mind halfway through, slipped, and had to watch as the Leipzig striker scored with a fantastic shot from the outside of his foot (Max Eberl's words).

We will all sit down together and discuss the issue.

Urbig about the summer plans

A setback, but not one that had any impact on the 21-year-old, who shook himself off briefly and then continued playing with his usual confidence. "Jonas is taking it all in stride," praised sporting director Eberl. "He gets up and comes back."

And his goalkeeping already resembles the man he's hoped to succeed at Bayern. Manuel Neuer also excels at anticipating long balls, intervening early, and, if necessary, clearing the ball at the halfway line. Urbig failed to do this once in Leipzig, but did very well in the second half.

Overall, despite his early slip-up, the winter signing from Cologne confirmed the solid overall impression he'd made in his first few months with the German champions. Especially since he was called upon far more often than originally expected. Urbig couldn't have predicted that the top dog would injure his calf while celebrating and be out for eight weeks.

There is no obligation to release players for the U-21 European Championship in Slovakia

"I'll definitely have the opportunity to reflect on one thing or another during my short summer vacation," Urbig hopes. "It's simply about putting myself at the service of the team," he says, quite maturely. "And as long as Manuel is injured and the coach picks me, I want to deliver the best possible performance on the pitch."

Who that will be this summer remains to be seen. Urbig could either travel with Bayern to the Club World Cup in the USA or with the German U-21 national team to the European Championship in Slovakia, for which there is no release requirement. "I haven't made a final decision yet," he assures. "We'll all sit down together and discuss the matter."

Incidentally, Urbig could receive a special honor in just two weeks. If 1. FC Köln, after FC Bayern in the first division, also wins the second division title, the Euskirchen native would become the third professional, after Pasi Rautiainen (Bayern/Bremen) and Frank Hartmann (Bayern/Hannover), to win both titles in one season in Germany.

"I would be extremely happy if FC Cologne became champions of the 2. Bundesliga," says Urbig, even grinning slightly. "I'll keep my fingers crossed, all two fingers I have. That's important, also for the club."
